Getting Inspired by Kindness

Everyone can recognize a kind act when they see it, but what is it that inspires these acts of kindness?  Maybe it is because we are in a good mood, or perhaps it is simply mimicking another’s behavior.  Sometimes it could be out of guilt, another time it might simply be a case of “being in the right place at the right time”.  So, why are we trying to explain where kindness comes from?

These are all legitimate reasons and they all have a common thread.  Someone felt inspired to carry out a good thought; they felt moved enough by an influence in their life that action was needed.  Imagine what you could accomplish if you felt this inspiration all the time.

The inspiration to carry out acts of kindness can, without a doubt, comes from positive thinking.  Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in a bad day or something not going the way you’ve planned, but there are lots of ways to pump yourself up with positive energy.

Surround yourself with positive minds.

You know that one friend you that’s always bashing on something – anything?  Yeah, we all have had that friend.  Take a break from that relationship and surround yourself with influences that you admire so much you strive to be like them.  It’s been said that we are most like the 5 people we are closest with and spend the most time with.  Choose wisely.

Start the day with a clean slate.

Stop worrying about what happened yesterday.  Dwelling on past events is actually a huge distraction and instead it is best to focus your energy on the 24 hours that are ahead of you.  Think about the great things that you will accomplish today and how fulfilled you will feel afterwards.  This goes hand in hand with our next topic…

Start each day with a positive thought.

I’ve tested this one and it works!  In the morning, as soon as you’re conscious enough to form complete sentences, think of something so awesome that it brings a smile to your face.  Then really think about it hard and focus on it until your smile won’t stop.  It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it makes you ridiculously happy enough to grin like an idiot.  Try to keep that smile going all day.

Have you been reading too many horrifying things on the news?  Sadly, they aren’t hard to come by.  Getting involved with a charity, program or just volunteer work is a quick way to jump in and help.   Taking action to make a difference is the greatest thing that you can do!  Social media is another sneaky culprit. Tune out any negative newsfeeds for a few days or follow some positive thinkers like the Dalai Lama, Post Secret, or TED.

A recent trip to Lake Tahoe… beautiful and just outside Reno’s front door.

Get outside.

Sunshine is a beautiful thing and the earth is literally a giant playground.  Nature is rad and an essential part of our lives.  I promise, you will never regret taking a hike, going to a lake, exploring the desert or going wherever your curiosity leads you.

Be kinder to yourself.

I recently saw a really cool commercial.  It showed different clips of people saying “sorry” in normal situations for which they had no need to apologize.  The clip held a giant mirror up in front of my face as it dawned on me that I do that all the time.  This is something that I personally am working on.  At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that we are all human and just trying to do our best in life.  We only know our own story and must always remember to be kind, even to ourselves, which is sometimes the hardest thing to do.

(The video is a little cheesy, but the general message is great and executed in a cute way.  Definitely not only applicable to girls either!)

So why are we trying to explain where kindness comes from?  We aren’t.  Regardless of where it comes from, the goal is to make kindness the norm.  To be so kind that it becomes an instinct and if we all work together, we can achieve this goal.
